There is a saying, “Necessity is the Mother of Inventions.” Well, many gadgets and technology used today resulted from necessity. Well, there is another saying that I recently learned during the pandemic, “Confinement is the Catalyst of Creativity.” For over a year (2020), the world was at a standstill. Many brick and mortar businesses were unable to survive, and other establishments had to quickly shift their workforce structure to a work-at-home business model. Although working remotely was a convenience and money saver for many, for others it was a juggling act. Many households were challenged with managing their work responsibilities while simultaneously assisting young children that were on a virtual learning platform.

During this time, daily walks were the only outdoor outlet I had for activity. During my year confinement, I tried to stay active, read, on occasion watch a movie and engaged in a few home projects. However, this got old quick, and I desired a new outlet to keep my mind in good shape. Well, this is when confinement can encourage a person to try new things and or engage in a new venture. I took up baking cakes and pastries. This was a total disaster, and the ingredients were not cheap. I realized quickly this was not my forte. In the process of surfing, YouTube videos, I came across a seamstress making a skirt, Anita by Design.
Anita was thorough! Not only did she give great direction on how to sew, but she did not assume her audience understood the language or concepts. She broke it down in basic terms, had tutorial videos from the sewing tools you will commonly use, how to read patterns, how to buy fabric, recommend sewing books and so on. I was inspired!
Between sewing which I truly enjoy and playing the piano, another reacquainted activity, I’m no longer bored. I now find I don’t have ENOUGH time to do all the projects and play as much as I like. I went from being bored to excitement and anticipation. For me, it’s the thrill of the challenge that’s enticing. I know the result of a few sewing projects will fall short of my expectation. However, this means the second attempt will be better. Upon my return to my business office, I wore a couple of the outfits I made and a few of my coworkers were amazed I did so well without any prior training.
